One of the most challenging parts of the web design process is getting design sign off. It can prove time consuming, demoralizing and if you are not careful can lead to a dissatisfied client. What is more you can end up with a design that you are ashamed to include in your portfolio.
How then can you ensure that the design you produce is the one that gets built? How can you get the client to sign off on your design? Below are 10 tips learnt from years of bitter experience.

Thinking 2.0
As web geeks, we have a thick skin towards jargon. We all know that “Web 2.0” has been done to death. At Blue Flavor we even have a jargon bucket to penalize those who utter such painfully overused jargon with a cash deposit. But Web 2.0 is a term that has lodged itself into the conscience of the masses. This is actually a good thing.

Use the free open-source online service - Browsershots. Browsershots makes screenshots of your web design in different browsers.
All you need to do is specify for which of the 40 browsers on Linux, 12 browsers on Windows & 4 browsers on Mac OS you want your screenshots and submit your web address. You can optionally configure settings like screen size, color depth, Javascript/Java/Flash support on the browsers you want to test for. These requests are queued & processed by a number of distributed computers. The estimated time range is specified and you can reload or bookmark the page to view the generated screenshots.

It can be done by activating the Develop menu (which is disabled by default) and picking the Show Error Console option (similar to Tools menu > Error Console option in Firefox).

If you have worked with Prototype and used its really cool Ajax features you might have noticed one downside to it: It will only work in Internet Explorer 6 if ActiveX is enabled. This might seem neglible now that IE7 is spreading - but many businesses and also many other surfers still use IE6 (and will for some time), and for security reasons ActiveX is turned off in many cases. Yet there is a solution to still use Ajax.

HTML Purifier is a PHP library to securely filter any HTML (user) input - I stumbled onto it when reading the book PHP-Sicherheit by Christopher Kunz, Stefan Esser and Peter Prochaska. The book describes ways to prevent security breaches in PHP, and one possibility to completely prevent XSS vulnerabilities is HTML Purifier.
